Well, yesterday the Democrats did in fact introduce an article of impeachment against the President. This one looks very similar to the draft article of impeachment that we discussed three days ago, but some language has been added, including language referencing the 14th Amendment, references to Trump’s claims of voter fraud in the months preceding the Capitol riots rather than just his conduct on January Sixth itself as well as January Second, a quote from a statement made by Trump on January Sixth, namely, “If you don’t fight like hell you’re not going to have a country anymore”, and a reference to the fact that law enforcement personnel were injured and even killed by the rioters on January Sixth.
So what’s going on with this? Well, this evening, the House will vote to formally call Vice President Pence to invoke the Twenty-Fifth Amendment; he won’t. And then tomorrow the House will begin debate on the impeachment resolution.
Nancy Pelosi said, “The president’s threat to America is urgent, and so too will be our action.” Top House Republican Kevin McCarthy, who is one of Trump’s most ardent supporters in Congress, top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell as you know at times has seemed to see Trump as a problem to be dealt with and a fire to be put out, while Kevin McCarthy, Top House Republican, on the other hand, has historically been more of a Trump enthusiast.
But McCarhty has admitted this week that Trump does deserve some blame for what took place at the Capitol last Wednesday, and the New York Times is reporting that as many as a dozen Republicans are considering joining Democrats to vote yes on the impeachment resolution.
And because only a simple majority is needed in the House to impeach, it seems quite likely that Donald Trump will be impeached in the House.
Of course, that simply means that the president is then charged with the high crimes and misdemeanors specified in the article of impeachment, the situation then moves to the Senate, where a two-thirds majority is required to actually convict the president.
That is obviously a much steeper hurdle. Now, obviously, Trump is out of office on January Twentieth. That would mean that almost certainly the Senate trial would take place after he leaves office. Some might see this as a waste of time in the early days of the Biden administration, time that could be better spent in the Senate on things like getting help to the American people right now.
Biden has said that his first and foremost priority is getting the next stimulus bill passed, and his number two priority is rebuilding our economy. Nevertheless, he said that he would not get in the way of impeachment proceedings and that perhaps once he’s in office the Senate could spend half the day on the trial and half on the official business of the Biden administration, which in the early days of any presidential administration is confirming Biden’s cabinet and other nominees.
Speaking of Biden, federal law enforcement is significantly beefing up Capitol security in anticipation of Biden’s inauguration on January Twentieth. Security is being beefed up around state capitals as well as other parts of Washington, D.C. in anticipation of further protests and unrest. But even with all that has happened, Biden has said that he is not afraid of taking the oath of office outside.
Now even apart from the Congressional impeachment proceedings, the fallout from Trump’s claims of voter fraud and the riots and breaching of the Capitol on January Sixth, the fallout has been huge for Trump, huge for Republicans, huge for conservatives in general, as I’m sure you’ve heard, the conservative social media platform Parler, lights have gone out, because their host, Amazon Web Services, gave them the boot. And mainstream social media sites like Facebook, for example, Facebook’s removing content containing the phrase “Stop the Steal”, Twitter is suspending more accounts everyday, companies are stopping donations to Republicans, so the fallout here is significant for the president and for his party.
But back to the impeachment issue, I want to know what you think. I’m not asking you if you think that Trump should be impeached or not, he will be, the House is making that very clear, my question for you is even if you think Trump should be impeached, do you think that perhaps going through with it in the House and then proceeding to the trial in the Senate, do you think this is taking away valuable Senate time that could rather be spent on the next stimulus bill? Remember, Trump’s first impeachment trial from about a year ago lasted almost three weeks.
And keep in mind that in addition to stimulus, the Senate is also busy with the confirmation hearings for Biden’s nominees to his cabinet and other positions. So let me know what you think.
Even if you think Trump should be impeached, do you agree with folks like Joe Manchin, I played you the clip yesterday, he said he thinks Trump deserves impeachment but it’s just not practical in the hour we are in right now, he said we don’t need to do this, let the courts handle it, let’s just move forward, full steam ahead, with the Biden administration and taking care of business with getting America back on track economically.
