Before we get into the stimulus stuff, today White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the Treasury Department is reviving the Obama-era effort to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with Harriet Tubman. 

Let me know what you think about that in the comments, should we leave the $20 bill alone or should we replace Andrew Jackson with Harriet Tubman?  Stimulus, yesterday the bipartisan group — Joe Manchin, Mitt Romney, Lisa Murkowski, and others — rejected Biden’s stimulus plan, claiming that it provides too much money to high-income Americans. 

This is kind of echoing Mitch McConnell’s claim that the two thousand dollar stimulus checks because it’s so much money people making over two hundred grand, even over three hundred grand, married filing jointly with a couple kids, would still get some form of a stimulus check, not the whole thing mind you.  Like we mentioned previously on the channel, Larry Kudlow’s replacement Brian Deese as well as other Biden administration officials had a seventy-five-minute call yesterday with the bipartisan group of sixteen senators along with the two House co-chairs of the Problem Solvers Caucus, Democrat Josh Gottheimer and Republican Tom Reed. 

Joe Manchin organized this call, and bipartisan group of senators basically told Deese that they support spending more on vaccine distribution but don’t like the stimulus payment.  Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine was basically pointing out why families making three hundred thousand dollars a year would be eligible to get free government money, and she said that the focus should be on lower-income workers, she said the payments should be more targeted. 

Susan Collins also said that she is “going to suggest that we get together and talk about what we think would be a reasonable package, and one that could garner bipartisan support.”  She said, “The administration clearly is very eager to move very quickly. And we want to make sure that there is justification, especially since there’s so much money remaining from the previous packages.” 

Independent Senator Angus King of Maine, who himself caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate said of the large one-point-nine-trillion-dollar top-line figure for Biden’s plan, King said, “This isn’t monopoly money.”  King did say though that the Biden officials on the call were open to the input from the bipartisan group, so that’s hopeful, but still this group, like many Republicans outside of this group simply sees Biden’s plan as not targeted enough.  So that’s obviously a setback for the Biden plan, at least for the Biden plan to make it through the Senate under the normal legislative process. 

Speaking of the normal legislative process, we’re having problems.  As we’ve said in previous videos, right now Mitch McConnell is demanding that Chuck Schumer agree to preserve the legislative filibuster and if Schumer does not, he can forget about Republicans working with Democrats in anything in the Senate. 

Schumer has refused to explicitly say that he will preserve the legislative filibuster and is calling McConnell’s demand to preserve it unacceptable and it won’t be accepted.  So what’s going on in the Senate right now?  Well, because of this filibuster issue, Schumer and McConnell have been unable to agree on the Organizing Resolution.  What’s that?  Well, just quoting directly from the Senate website, “At the beginning of a new Congress, the Senate adopts an organizing resolution listing committee ratios, committee membership, and other agreements between the parties on the operation of the Senate.” 

And these committee ratios and who’s in charge of which committee is extremely important in a fifty-fifty Senate, so right now we still have the same Republican committee chairs that we had when Republicans still controlled the Senate. 

So it’s basically a big mess to getting anything done in the Senate right now.  And of course, I feel like I use this word on every update, the big question is will Democrats seek to pass some stimulus measures via reconciliation?  As we’ve discussed before on the channel, reconciliation is a complicated process, and if they did go that route, stimulus ain’t coming fast.  For what it’s worth though, Bernie Sanders was on CNN yesterday saying that reconciliation is the appropriate step forward if Republicans don’t fall in line here. 

In other political news, Republican Senator Rob Portman announced today that he will not be seeking reelection, meaning that there will be an open Senate seat in Ohio in the 2022 elections.  Also, the final vote on Janet Yellen as Treasury Secretary will be taken tonight in the Senate, I and pretty much everybody else expects that she will be confirmed.
